Whether you're a DJ, producer, or just an independent creator, you can add your own music to Instagram's music library for use on the Instagram app!

Today we’ll take you through the steps required to get your tracks added to the Instagram music library, plus what to do if you're not seeing certain songs in your library.

Key Points:

How Do I Add My Own Music To Instagram?

There are two main methods to getting your music on Instagram: uploading it using a distributor, or simply integrating your original track into your video clip before you post it to Instagram.

Using A Distributor

For this method you’ll need to get your music uploaded to a registered distributor. A few popular options include:

Once you’ve done this you should be able to search for your track on Instagram, and it’ll appear in the native music library. If you don’t see it, wait a few days and try again.

Another option is to upload your tracks to Soundcloud or Spotify, and you can link to these tracks directly from your Story.

Add Music During Editing

A simpler option, especially if you’re just starting out, is to just add the track you want to your video during editing before you upload it to Instagram.

Keep in mind that this is best done with original tracks - Instagram’s music library prevents you from getting a copyright strike, but if you manually integrate music without using the library you could put your account in jeopardy.

How Come I Can't Add Music To My Instagram?

If you’re not seeing a track in the music library and you know it’s uploaded to a distributor, wait a few days to see if it appears since there’s sometimes a delay. If it’s been a while, contact your distributor directly.

If you’re having trouble adding any type of music to your Instagram content, keep in mind that your account type matters - if you’re using a personal account try swapping to business and vice versa.

Sometimes Instagram will also remove features for certain accounts, or limit feature availability due to region. If you suspect this is the case, contact Instagram support to find out more.

Why Can't I Find My Music On Instagram?

Make sure your track was uploaded to a distributor. If it was a recent upload, give it a few days to make sure everything’s up to snuff. If it’s been a while, you should reach out to your distributor directly and see what the matter is.

Keep in mind that not all distributors work with Instagram, so choose one that clarifies this early on before you commit to working with someone.

Why Isn't All Music Available On Instagram?

Instagram’s music library can be limited due to copyright restrictions, region restrictions, or licensing issues. So if you’re not seeing certain tracks on there, it’s likely because the artist is working with a distributor that doesn’t mesh with Instagram.

If you’ve seen certain tracks in the past but just aren’t able to access them suddenly, it could be a glitch on Instagram’s part. Make sure you haven’t been hit with a copyright strike first, then try uninstalling and reinstalling your app before searching for the track again.

What To Do If A Song Isn't On Instagram?

Unfortunately if a song isn’t available in the Instagram music library you won’t be able to legally use it in your content. While some artists work around this by integrating the track into their videos during the editing process, doing so is a violation of Instagram’s terms of service and can result in getting a copyright strike or even having your account outright banned.

You do have the option of trying to get licensing for a track if you really want to use it, or explicit permission from the creator. Cover songs can sometimes also be fair use, but do your research before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Instagram Story music stuck at 5 seconds?

It's probably because you adjusted the music time length for a previous Story. You can learn how to resolve this in our guide here.

How long can Instagram Story music be?

Instagram Stories allow up to 15 seconds of music, but an individual Instagram Story can be up to 60 seconds in length. If your Story is 60 seconds long, the 15 second audio clip will repeat during that time.

Can you monetize music on Instagram?

Currently Instagram doesn’t have a built in monetization system for its music specifically, but if you upload through a distributor you should be earning royalties.
