Ready to put your music on Spotify? Here's how you can get started with a Spotify Artist page.
Choose A Distributor
In order to upload your music to Spotify or other streaming services, you'll need to choose a music distributor that can manage licensing, distribution, and royalty payments for your streams. You can browse Spotify's catalog of recommended distributors here.
Be sure to choose a distributor that suits your needs, and read their terms of service carefully.
Once you've chosen a distributor and set up an account with them, you can move on to the next steps.
Upload Your Music To Your Distributor
You'll need to upload your music to Spotify via your distributor, so before you start adding tracks to your artists profile, make sure that you've included accurate metadata, cover art, and a file of the highest quality.
File Quality
Spotify accepts audio files in WAV or FLAC format, but recommends using FLAC for best results.
Track Metadata
Ensure that your metadata is accurate before uploading to your Spotify account, since any issues will need to be resolved by your distributor once your new music is live.
Metadata includes:
-
Artist Names
-
Artist Roles
-
Live Dates
-
Country Availability
-
Explicity Lyric Tags
-
Cover Art
Cover Art
Your cover art should be in the highest resolution possible. Be sure to meet the following requirements:
-
TIFF, PNG, or JPG format
-
Between 640px - 10000px (wide and tall)
-
1:1 aspect ratio
Spotify For Artists Dashboard
Now that your music is up, you can access your artist profile and dashboard. If you want to access your dashboard before your first track has gone live, you'll need to contact your distributor for your artist profile link.
From your artist dashboard you can:
-
track music performance
-
manage content
-
engage with your audience
-
customize your profile
-
verify your identity
Build Your Artist Profile
To prepare for your new release, you can complete your artist profile. From here you can include:
-
Photos
-
Bios, where you can share your about info or tour dates
-
custom links
NOTE: If you want to change your artist name or album title you will have to ask your record label or distributor to submit a metadata update to Spotify, including the new artist name in each of your songs.
Promoting Your Music
You can share your music across social media using your Spotify link, but there are also a few other ways to prepare for release day within Spotify itself, including Spotify playlist features and Canvas.
Pitch A Song To Spotify's Curated Playlists
While you can create your own playlists to feature your tracks alongside other musicians, you can also send a pitch to Spotify's editors for the possibility of them including your future releases in their latest curated playlists.
To pitch a song, follow the steps below:
-
Log in to Spotify for Artists
-
Click Pitch From Next Release at the top of the home tab.
-
Select the unreleased song you wish to pitch and fill out the info.
For best results, ensure you pitch your song at least 7 days before its release date.
You can only pitch one song at a time, so make it count!
If your pitch is chosen to be included in the latest Spotify playlists, you'll receive an email.
Using Canvas
Spotify's Canvas tool is a short looping video that you can include with your tracks, like album art that moves.
To get started with Canvas, visit the dedicated page here.
Networking & Collaborations
A great way to gain listeners and fans from around the world is by networking with other musicians and creators on social media. A great place for this is YouTube - you can collaborate with a YouTuber by offering your tracks as background music for a quick shout out!
Build collaborative playlists with other artists, interact on TikTok and Instagram Live, and facilitate a community around your music. There are tons of options when it comes to networking, so get creative!
