It's all about the content

 

While there are a variety of ways to engage your audience, the most sustainable and cost effective way of increasing engagement is by creating consistent, high-quality content. With Instagram you have several options: photos, videos, Instagram Stories, and IGTV content. We highly recommend that you utilize each of these options to its fullest extent. Sticking to only one form of content is a sure way to fall into a social media rut, so mix things up by posting a blend of media types.

 

Instagram Photos

Instagram’s primary media format is photos, so it should come as no surprise that this is where the bulk of your content should be. It’s important to use recent, high-quality photos that are true to your brand - and owned by you! While it’s tempting to use stock photos or to slip in a few scenic images that you found online, it’s essential that you maintain trust with your audience and authenticity with your brand. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to create engaging images, either! Instagram was created as a way for everyone to share photos, regardless of their skill set. Here are a few easy tips that can help increase the overall quality of your image:

 

  • Take your picture in indirect natural light. Indoor lighting can result in grainy, out-of-focus images that look messy on your feed. Try taking photos near a window or outdoors for best results.
  • Ignore the rule of thirds! While Photography 101 might emphasize the importance of the rule of thirds, Instagram’s square photo format favors centered images. A subject in the left or right third of this square will look unbalanced when viewed in your feed.
  • Be natural: while it’s easy to get caught up in the “influencer” trend, your audience wants to see the real you behind the brand. Candid images are more popular than highly staged photo shoots.
  • Mix it up: selfies, pet photos, foodstagrams, scenic shots, vacation videos...the list goes on! Choose a variety of subjects for your feed, and play around with the angles for a more engaging and vibrant content pool.
  • Less is more: avoid overly cluttered imagery in favor of simple backgrounds and single subject shots. After all, you want to avoid being a face in the crowd.

 

Instagram Videos

Video is one of the most valuable forms of media, allowing users to pack in a ton of information in a short amount of time. Instagram’s video length limit is 1 minute, so make the most of it! As with your photos, be sure to film in good quality light, and choose an interesting subject. It’s also important to make sure the sound quality is decent - if you can’t hear what’s going on, be sure to mute the video in order to avoid unnecessary distraction. There’s nothing wrong with a silent clip if it’s interesting!

 

Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories are a great way to include content that would otherwise clutter your feed. The basic rule of thumb when it comes to Instagram etiquette is to avoid posting more than 3 photos or videos within a 24 hour period. If you just can’t wait and have more to share, Instagram Stories is where you should shift your focus. Here you can post photos, videos, boomerangs, and slow motion content. Get creative with hashtags, location tags, stickers, GIFs, and more! Just keep in mind that there is a limit to how many Instagram Stories people will engage with. Aim for no more than 6-8 posts within 24 hours, or you’ll find that your followers are skipping through your Stories feed in favor of more engaging content. IGTV
